FRENCH RIVIERA

Background

In 1985, Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) received an invitation to participate in the French Riviera Classic, a series of exhibition football games held in France. The invitation was a significant opportunity for the PLU Lutes, as it would allow them to showcase their talents on an international stage and promote cultural exchange between the United States and France.  The Lutes visit to France originally was to play a French and and Italian All-star team, along with the Paris Blue Angles in the French Riviera Football Classic.  Because of a jurisdictional dispute between AMERFOOT and the French Sports Federation, the two team had to bow out, leaving just the Blue Angles and Lutes.

The PLU Lutes were a strong football program, and they were coming off a successful season in 1984. The team was led by head coach Frosty Westering, who was known for his innovative coaching methods and his ability to build strong team cultures.
